Answers to June 1996 Quiz

1.On what mountain did Moses receive the "law?"
Answer: Sinai
"And the LORD said unto Moses, Come up to me into the mount, and be there: and I will give thee tables of stone, and a law, and commandments which I have written; that thou mayest teach them. And Moses rose up, and his minister Joshua: and Moses went up into the mount of God. And he said unto the elders, Tarry ye here for us, until we come again unto you: and, behold, Aaron and Hur are with you: if any man have any matters to do, let him come unto them. And Moses went up into the mount, and a cloud covered the mount. And the glory of the LORD abode upon mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days: and the seventh day he called unto Moses out of the midst of the cloud." (Exodus 24:12-16 KJV)

2. Who became speechless because of unbelief, until her/his son was born?
Answer: Zacharias (KJV) or Zechariah (NIV)

But the angel said to him: "Do not be afraid, Zechariah your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to give him the name John. (Luke 1:13 KJV)

"Zechariah asked the angel, "How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years." The angel answered, "I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news. And now you will be silent and not able to speak until the day this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their proper time."" (Luke 1:18-20 NIV)

3. Who was the person who ordered the death of 450 prophets
Answer: Elijah

"Then Elijah said to them, "I am the only one of the Lord's prophets left, but Baal has four hundred and fifty prophets." (1 Kings 18:22 NIV)

"Then Elijah commanded them, "Seize the prophets of Baal. Don't let anyone get away!" They seized them, and Elijah had them brought down to the Kishon Valley and slaughtered there." (1 Kings 18:40 NIV)

4. Who was an author and a physician?
Answer: Luke

"Therefore, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, it seemed good also to me to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus,"(Luke 1:3 NIV)

"Luke, the beloved physician, and Demas, greet you."(Colossians 4:14 KJV)

5. "I can do all things....."(complete the remark)?
Answer: ... through Christ which strengtheneth me
"I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me." (Phil. 4:13 KJV)

6. Who questioned the manner in which a living person could again be "born?"
Answer: Nicodemus
""How can a man be born when he is old?" Nicodemus asked. "Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother's womb to be born!" Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, 'You must be born again.'" (John 3:4-7 NIV)

7. Followers of Christ would be known by the following two things:
Answer: love one to another and our fruits

"By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another." (John 13:35 KJV)

"By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit." (Matthew 7:16-18 NIV)
[Note that the verse from Matthew also speaks in its context that false prophets would also be known by their fruits.]

The answer "signs and wonders" came up as well. I had originally rejected this due to the following scripture:

"For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall show great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect." (Matthew 24:24 KJV)
However, the following reference can be interpreted ambiguously:
"God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?" (Hebrews 2:4 KJV)
I believe the whole counsel of the Word of God is saying that followers of Christ will perform signs and wonders, but that false prophets will as well, so it cannot be the only deciding factor. However, the answer is accepted for purposes of this question.

8. What two commandments did Jesus say were the greatest?
Answer: see text below.
"And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these." (Mark 12:30-31 KJV)

9. What was the largest number of people that Jesus appeared to (at one time) after His resurrection?
Answer: over 500
"After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep." (1 Corinthians 15:6 NIV)

10. Abraham was originally from what land?
Answer: Ur of the Chaldees
"And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran his son's son, and Sarai his daughter in law, his son Abram's wife; and they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan; and they came unto Haran, and dwelt there." (Genesis 11:31 KJV)
